On this day in music history…

In 1977, Kool & The Gang performed for a crowd of over 2,600 people at SIU Arena in Carbondale, Illinois. The band opened their set with “Funky Stuff,” and they proceeded to play for about an hour. Cameo was the opening act. Three months earlier, they had released their debut album, Cardiac Arrest.

In 1985, Prince & The Revolution released their Around the World in a Day album. Despite mixed reviews, it went on to top the chart, making it Prince’s second number 1 album. Coming off the success of Purple Rain, the record company released the album with minimal publicity, and did not release any singles until “Raspberry Beret” nearly a month later.
