On this day in music history…

In 1990, two months after South African anti-apartheid activist and politician Nelson Mandela’s release from prison, a celebratory concert was held at Wembley Stadium in London. Titled Nelson Mandela: An International Tribute for a Free South Africa, the show was broadcast in over 60 countries. Performers at the sold-out concert included Bonnie Raitt, Chrissie Hynde, Jackson Browne, Lou Reed, Neil Young, Patti LaBelle, Peter Gabriel, Simple Minds, Steven Van Zandt, Tracy Chapman, and others.

In 1991, Temple of the Dog, the supergroup fronted by Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell along with members of Pearl Jam, released their only album. The self-titled album peaked at number 5 on the chart a year and a half after its release, coinciding with the success of Pearl Jam’s Ten album. The band reformed and toured in 2016 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the album.
