On this day in music history…

In 1970, Elton John released his second album. The self-titled album featured John’s first big hit, “Your Song,” which charted at number 8 in the U.S. and number 7 in his native U.K. The album would be certified gold in February 1971 by the RIAA. Ironically, producer Gus Dudgeon admitted the album was not actually intended to launch John as an artist, but rather to showcase polished demos of songs for other artists to record.

In 1983, Journey performed for a crowd of over 10,400 people at SIU Arena in Carbondale, Illinois. Two months earlier, the band had released their Frontiers album, which was charting at number 2 at the time of the concert. Bryan Adams was the opening act. Three months earlier, Adams had released his Cuts Like a Knife album, which was on the chart at number 33.
