In 1980, Rush released their seventh studio album, Permanent Waves. This was Rush’s first album to chart in the top five in the U.S., peaking at number 4. In the group’s native Canada, it was their second top-five album, peaking at number 3. A couple months after its release, Permanent Waves was certified Gold by the RIAA.
