One arrested after Christmas morning shooting in Mt. Vernon

MT. VERNON, Ill. (WJPF) – Three people, including two police officers, were injured in a shooting and police chase that happened early Christmas morning in Mt. Vernon.

Mt. Vernon Police say at about 12:50 a.m., an officer on patrol in the 300 block of South 9th Street witnessed Maliq Petties, 20, shoot another man with a handgun. The victim was taken to a St. Louis hospital and is expected to survive.

Police say after the shooting Petties  got into a vehicle and sped off, leading officers on a chase through Mt. Vernon that at times reached speeds near 100 miles per hour. Petties then entered Interstate 57, driving north in the southbound lanes. Soon after that, he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a Mt. Vernon Police squad car.

Police say Petties then took off running on foot. After officers saw Petties reach into his waistband, they fired a single shot. No one was hurt. After a physical altercation, Petties was taken into custody. The injured officers were treated and released from a local hospital.

Maliq Petties is facing charges of aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated fleeing/attempting to elude, armed violence, resisting arrest, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
