Secretary of State bomb squad activated during overnight standoff

ZEIGLER, Ill. (WJPF) – A mental health crisis overnight in Zeigler ended with a visit from the bomb squad.

Around 11:00 p.m. Tuesday, Zeigler Police say they received reports of a man threatening people with a chainsaw.  By the time police arrived on the scene at 215 North Pine Street, the man had barricaded himself inside of his home.  When officers went inside, they were attacked.  No serious injuries were reported and the man was taken into custody.

While being taken to a hospital, the man then claimed his house was rigged with explosives would blow-up. The Illinois Secretary of State bomb squad was called in; no explosives were found.

The man’s name has not been released.
