On this day in music history…
In 1982, Rainbow performed for a crowd of nearly 1,900 people at SIU Arena in Carbondale, Illinois. Concertgoers paid between $7 and $9 per ticket. The previous month, Rainbow had released their Straight Between the Eyes album, which would debut on the chart at number 94 the day after the show. Charlie Midnight was the opening act.
In 1998, Steve Perry parted ways with Journey for the second time. A couple years earlier, after reuniting their classic-era lineup, Journey released their Trial by Fire album. A comeback tour was to follow, until Perry suffered a hip injury that required surgery for him to be able to perform. For a while, he declined to get the surgery, which caused friction with his bandmates. Ultimately, Perry decided to leave Journey once again. Journey carried on with Steve Augeri on lead vocals for the next eight years.
