On this day in music history…
In 1973, Sonny & Cher performed for a crowd of nearly 10,400 people at SIU Arena in Carbondale, Illinois. The concert was part of the festivities for that year’s Spring Fest. Concertgoers paid between $4 and $6 per ticket. Comedian David Brenner was the opening act.
In 1974, “The Loco-Motion” by Grand Funk Railroad topped the singles chart. This was the second time that “The Loco-Motion” went to number 1; the first time occurred in 1962, when Little Eva’s rendition of the song took the top spot.
