On this day in music history…

In 1968, the members of Buffalo Springfield were partying and jamming with Eric Clapton at Stephen Stills’s girlfriend’s house in Topanga, California. Due to the noise, neighbors called the police. Upon their arrival, the authorities saw illegal substances and proceeded to arrest everyone present, including Clapton, Richie Furay, Jim Messina, and Neil Young. Stephen Stills, however, was not arrested, because he had snuck out a window.
 

 
In 1970, Elton John released “Border Song,” the lead single from his self-titled album. It was John’s first single to chart. The song peaked at number 92 in the U.S. It did not chart in John’s native U.K.
