On this day in music history…
In 1975, the Ken Russell film Tommy hit theaters in the U.S. The movie was based on The Who’s rock opera of the same name. In addition to the members of The Who, the star-studded cast included Ann-Margret, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Paul Nicholas, Tina Turner, Arthur Brown, and others. Tommy was a smash at the box office and received positive reviews.
In 1990, Mother Love Bone frontman Andrew Wood was taken off of life support at Harborview Hospital in Seattle following a heroin overdose a few days earlier. Wood was 24 years old. The group disbanded after Wood’s passing, and Mother Love Bone members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were approached by Chris Cornell about recording together. Mike McCready, Matt Cameron, and Eddie Vedder also came aboard the project, forming Temple of the Dog. Later that same year, Gossard and Ament would continue working with Vedder and McCready, forming Pearl Jam.
