On this day in music history…
In 1967, The Beatles landed their 13th number 1 single in the U.S. with “Penny Lane.” Although credited to the songwriting duo of Lennon-McCartney, it was written chiefly by Paul McCartney, who also sang lead vocals on the track. The lyrics refer to the actual Penny Lane, a street in Liverpool, and make mention of the sights and characters that McCartney recalled from his upbringing in the city.
In 1976, the Nicolas Roeg film The Man Who Fell to Earth hit theaters. The movie was based on the novel of the same name by Walter Tevis. The starring role of Thomas Jerome Newton was played by David Bowie, marking his first major role on the big screen. Stills from the movie would be used as cover art for Bowie’s next two albums, Station to Station and Low.
