On this day in music history…

In 1986, ZZ Top performed for a crowd of about 10,200 people at SIU Arena in Carbondale, Illinois. The band opened the show with “Got Me Under Pressure” and proceeded to play for 90 minutes. Four months earlier, ZZ Top had released their Afterburner album, which was charting at number 13 at the time of the concert.
 

 
In 1989, R.E.M. performed for a crowd of about 4,300 people at SIU Arena in Carbondale, Illinois. The band played for over two hours, ending the show with three encores, which featured covers of songs by the Rolling Stones and Velvet Underground. Four months earlier, R.E.M. had released their Green album, which was charting at number 12 at the time of the concert.
