In 1978, Kate Bush released her debut album, The Kick Inside. Bush was just 19 years old at the time. The album, which featured appearances by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd and Stuart Elliott of the Alan Parsons Project, peaked at number 3 on the chart in her native U.K. Despite critical acclaim, the album did not chart in the U.S.
In 1984, The Police performed for a near-capacity crowd of 10,200 people at SIU Arena in Carbondale, Illinois. The band played for over 90 minutes, and their set included all but two of the songs from their most recent album, Synchronicity. At one point in the concert, Sting thought aloud about the name of the arena’s home city, saying to the audience, “Carbondale — that’s a funny name, isn’t it? Makes me think of a coal mine.” Re-Flex was the opening act.
