On this day in music history…

In 1975, Cher’s variety show, simply titled Cher, premiered on CBS. Elton John and Bette Midler were her first guests. Cher was no stranger to hosting a TV show; she had already done so for three years alongside her then-husband Sonny Bono on The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour. After two seasons, Cher went back to working with Bono on The Sonny and Cher Show.
 

 
In 1990, one day before his 18th birthday, Billie Joe Armstrong dropped out of Pinole Valley High School in Pinole, California. A couple months later, Green Day would release their debut studio album, 39/Smooth.
