On this day in music history…

In 1977, the Eagles took the top spot on the albums chart for the third time in their career with Hotel California. The album yielded three hit singles: “New Kid in Town” and the title track each peaked at number 1 and “Life in the Fast Lane” peaked at number 11.

In 1981, Phil Collins appeared on Top of the Pops in his native U.K. to perform his debut solo single, “In the Air Tonight.” The song had just been released six days earlier. “In the Air Tonight” went on to chart at number 19 in the U.S. and number 2 in the U.K.
