On this day in music history…
In 1983, Quiet Riot topped the U.S. albums chart with their Metal Health album. Bolstered by their hit cover of the Slade song “Cum On Feel The Noize”, this made Metal Health the first heavy metal album to go to number 1. Despite the historic milestone, it only stayed in the top spot for one week.
In 1989, MTV Unplugged premiered on MTV. The musicians featured on the first episode were Squeeze co-founders Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook, Jules Shear, Syd Straw, and former Cars guitarist Elliot Easton. Shear hosted the program in addition to performing on it. The debut episode had been taped a month prior to airing at the National Video Center in New York.
