On this day in music history…

In 1974, The Doobie Brothers performed for a crowd of about 7,600 people at SIU Arena in Carbondale, Illinois. The band had released their What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits album in February, and it had been their most successful album on the chart up to that point. Unicorn was the opening act.

In 1987, “Mony Mony” by Billy Idol hit number 1 on the singles chart, where it would stay for one week. Idol had knocked Tiffany out of the top spot, who had been at number 1 for the previous two weeks with “I Think We’re Alone Now.” The connection? Both songs were originally hits for Tommy James & The Shondells. They released “I Think We’re Alone Now” in 1967 and it peaked at number 4; “Mony Mony” followed in 1968, peaking at number 3.
