On November 13, 2025, at around 8:30 p.m., City of Carbondale Police Officers responded to the 1400 block of North Illinois Avenue for a report of an arson in progress.

Officers arrived to find the residence was on fire, but no one was still inside. The suspect, Martin M. Ramirez, 57, of Carbondale, attempted to flee in his vehicle but was stopped and arrested by responding officers. Ramirez was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm at the time of his arrest.  Ramirez was arrested for Aggravated Arson, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and Endangering the Life and Health of a Child.

Ramirez was incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail pending a detention hearing.
