On this day in music history…
In 1967, The Doors appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show. The band had planned on performing their new single, “People Are Strange,” followed by their number 1 hit “Light My Fire.” Shortly before the start of the show, one of Sullivan’s producers spoke with the band, telling them that the line “Girl, we couldn’t get much higher” had to be changed to something more appropriate for the family audience. When the time came to play “Light My Fire,” Morrison sang the line unchanged, infuriating Sullivan and his team. The Doors were then banned from the show.
In 1976, The Charlie Daniels Band played to a crowd of about 7,300 people at SIU Arena in Carbondale, Illinois. The group opened with “Sweet Louisiana” from their Saddle Tramp album, which had been released six months earlier.
