On this day in music history…
In 1993, Pearl Jam’s music video for “Jeremy” won four awards at the MTV Video Music Awards: Best Direction in a Video, Best Metal/Hard Rock Video, Best Group Video, and, most notably, Video of the Year. Fourteen-year-old Trevor Wilson, who played the role of Jeremy in the music video, joined Pearl Jam on stage when they accepted the award for Video of the Year.
In 1994, Hootie & The Blowfish performed on The Late Show with David Letterman for the first time. At that point, their debut album, Cracked Rear View, had been out for a couple months, and the only single they had released was “Hold My Hand.” A month after Hootie’s Late Show appearance, “Hold My Hand” debuted on the singles chart, where it eventually peaked at number 10. Cracked Rear View went on to top the albums chart the following year.
