On this day in music history…
In 2008, Billy Joel played the last concert at Shea Stadium before its demolition the following year. Dubbed “The Last Play at Shea,” Joel played two dates—July 16 and 18—and he welcomed multiple guests to the stage, including John Mayer, Steven Tyler, Roger Daltrey, John Mellencamp, and Paul McCartney, who famously graced the stage at Shea Stadium with The Beatles in 1965. Joel’s Shea Stadium concerts were explored in the 2010 documentary The Last Play at Shea.

In 2018, Billy Joel played his 100th show at Madison Square Garden. The capacity crowd was treated to a surprise; Bruce Springsteen joined Joel on stage to perform “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” and “Born to Run.” A banner was raised in MSG that night, marking Joel’s 100th show at the Garden.
