In 1979, “Bad Girls” by Donna Summer hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and it would stay in that position for five weeks. At that point, Summer’s only other number 1 hit was “Hot Stuff,” which had topped the chart for three weeks the previous month. Summer’s Bad Girls album had hit number 1 on the albums chart the previous month as well, and it spent a total of six weeks in the top spot.
In 1982, the Alan Parker film Pink Floyd—The Wall premiered in the U.K. With Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof starring as Pink, the movie was heavily based on Pink Floyd’s 1979 album The Wall. Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters, who was largely responsible for writing the album, also wrote the movie’s screenplay. The film received positive reviews from critics.
