On this day in music history…
In 1967, The Monkees performed at the Jacksonville Coliseum in Jacksonville, Florida on their North American tour. At this show, The Monkees welcomed a new opening act: The Jimi Hendrix Experience. While The Monkees were enthusiastic about having Hendrix and his band on the tour, Monkees fans were not, and they made it known by screaming for The Monkees during Hendrix’s sets. The Jimi Hendrix Experience lasted all of seven shows before they backed out of the remaining dates.
In 2023, Elton John played the final concert of his touring career at Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, bringing his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour to an end. The tour had started five years earlier, and when all was said and done, 330 shows had been performed. The total gross revenue of the tour came out to $939.1 million, which made it the highest-grossing concert tour in history at the time.
