On this day in music history…
In 1964, The Beatles kicked off the Oceanian leg of their 1964 world tour at Centennial Hall in Adelaide, Australia. Because Ringo Starr was in the hospital recovering from tonsillitis, Jimmie Nicol was playing drums for the group as a stand-in on the tour. Starr’s first show back was on June 15, and The Beatles’ tour dates in Australia and New Zealand would wrap up 15 days later. That would end up being their only Oceanian tour.
In 2005, it was announced that Pink Floyd would reunite for the London leg of Live 8 at Hyde Park. The band’s classic lineup of David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Richard Wright, and Nick Mason would perform together for the first time since 1981. Live 8 marked the final time that Gilmour, Waters, Wright, and Mason played together; Wright would pass away a few years later.
