On this day in music history…

–In 1979, Eric Clapton and Pattie Boyd held their wedding reception. Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr were in attendance, and the three partook in an all-star jam session. It was the first time they had publicly played together since the Beatles’ rooftop concert 10 years earlier. The guest list also included David Bowie, Elton John, Mick Jagger and Bill Wyman of The Rolling Stones, former Cream bandmates Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, and former Moody Blues member and future Wings member Denny Laine, and others.


–In 1986,
Peter Gabriel released his fifth solo album, titled So. The album catapulted Gabriel into mainstream rock stardom. It peaked at number two on the U.S. albums chart and it topped the chart in his native U.K. So produced two top 10 hits for Gabriel, including “Sledgehammer,” which remains his only number one hit in the U.S.
