On this day in music history…
In 1989, Living Colour was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. They performed “Cult of Personality” and “Open Letter (to a Landlord)” from their debut album, Vivid. Four months later, the band gained further exposure as an opening act for The Rolling Stones on their Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle Tour.
In 1991, Rod Stewart performed at Wembley Arena in London. When it came time to sing “You’re in My Heart (The Final Acclaim),” Stewart called for his then-wife, Rachel Hunter, to join him on stage. As a joke, Hunter sent one of Stewart’s male friends on stage instead, wearing make-up, a wig, and women’s clothing. Stewart played along, serenading his friend instead of his wife. The cross-dressed friend was none other than Elton John.
