Police in Carterville are reminding residents to take extra steps to protect their vehicles after several recent reports of break-ins.

Officers say the best way to deter thieves is to lock your vehicle, remove valuables or keep them out of sight, and use exterior lights or security cameras if you have them.

Police also encourage you to report any suspicious activity right away.
