On this day in music history…

In 1957, Elvis Presley appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show for the third and final time. Presley was only filmed from the waist up this time; his body movements on The Ed Sullivan Show a couple months earlier had caused a national uproar.

In 1979, Village People appeared on American Bandstand. A few months earlier, the group had released their Cruisin’ album, which featured their hit “Y.M.C.A.” During Village People’s performance of the song, the audience started doing the now-famous “Y.M.C.A.” dance. It took the group and host Dick Clark by surprise, so much so in Clark’s case that he had the chorus from the record played again to show Village People the crowd’s newly created dance.
