On this day in music history…
In 1973, Jim Croce hit number 1 on the singles chart with “Time in a Bottle.” The song had originally been released on Croce’s You Don’t Mess Around with Jim album the previous year, but after his untimely death in September 1973, “Time in a Bottle” began getting more airplay, which led to the song’s release as a single.
In 1982, Neil Young released his 13th studio album, Trans. It was Young’s first release on Geffen Records. Young pursued a more electronic sound on Trans, using synthesizers and a vocoder, which surprised critics and fans. The album was influenced by the electronic experiments of the German band Kraftwerk, but Neil said that distorting his voice reflected his attempts to communicate with his son Ben, who was born with cerebral palsy, and is non-verbal.
