On this day in music history…
In 1968, Led Zeppelin made their first American concert appearance, performing for a capacity crowd at the Denver Auditorium Arena in Denver. Led Zeppelin was the opening act, taking the stage before Spirit and headliner Vanilla Fudge. The concert almost didn’t happen for Led Zeppelin. They were added to the sold-out bill a week beforehand after Vanilla Fudge’s agent called the promoter and said they’d be willing to give Led Zeppelin $750 to be the opening act.
In 1970, George Harrison became the first of the Beatles to score a chart-topping hit in the U.S. as a solo artist with “My Sweet Lord.” Paul McCartney hit number 1 the next year with “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey;” Ringo Starr followed in 1973 with “Photograph;” and John Lennon did so in 1974 with “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night.”
