On this day in music history…

In 1979, Rupert Holmes topped the singles chart with “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” from his Partners in Crime album. The song stayed at number 1 for two weeks, making it the last song to top the chart in the ‘70s decade.

In 1984, Madonna hit number 1 on the singles chart for the first time with “Like a Virgin,” the lead single from her album of the same name. The album’s other singles that followed were also successful: “Material Girl” peaked at number 2, “Angel” peaked at number 5, and “Dress You Up” also peaked at number 5.
