On this day in music history…

In 1979, “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles hit its peak position on the singles chart at number 40. The song was the lead single for their debut album, The Age of Plastic, which was released the following month. Less than two years later, the video for the song would famously become the first video played on a fledgling cable channel called MTV.
 

 
In 1988, James Brown was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison in Aiken, South Carolina. A jury had found Brown guilty of aggravated assault and failing to stop for police, stemming from a situation in September when he’d led the police on a car chase. About two years later, Brown was released on parole, and just over three months after that, he made a return to the stage.
