On this day in music history…
In 2012, Madison Square Garden was packed with a sold-out crowd for 12-12-12: The Concert for Sandy Relief. In late October and early November, Hurricane Sandy had wreaked havoc in 24 states, with New Jersey and New York getting hit especially hard. The storm caused $70 billion of damage in the U.S. The 12-12-12 concert was quickly organized, and tickets went on sale nine days before the show. They sold out in minutes. The concert’s star-studded lineup included Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Roger Waters, Eddie Vedder, Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Billy Joel, Chris Martin, Michael Stipe, Paul McCartney, surviving members of Nirvana, and more. In addition to playing to a sold-out Garden, the artists were also performing to a massive crowd of at-home viewers. Over 19 million Americans tuned in to the concert across the over 30 channels airing it on television. The concert raised over $50 million for the Robin Hood Relief Fund.
