On this day in music history…
In 1980, around 10:50pm Eastern time, John Lennon was shot four times by Mark David Chapman outside his residence at the Dakota in New York City. In the ensuing chaos, two police officers rushed the heavily bleeding Lennon to Roosevelt Hospital in their squad car. The medical professionals at the hospital immediately began attempting to resuscitate Lennon, with no success. He was pronounced dead at 11:15 pm. Lennon was 40 years old.
In 1995, four months after the passing of Jerry Garcia, Grateful Dead announced their disbandment. The band had been together for 30 years. A few years later, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and Mickey Hart formed The Other Ones. They toured for several years and released their only album in 1999.
