On this day in music history…

In 1984, Madonna released her second studio album, Like a Virgin. Despite mixed critical reviews, the album was a huge success. Like a Virgin was Madonna’s first number 1 album, and all four of its singles were top five hits. Within a year, the album was certified six times Platinum by the RIAA.

In 1987, Sly Stone was scheduled to perform two comeback concerts at the Las Palmas Theatre in Los Angeles. The first show was supposed to begin at 8 p.m., with the second show starting two hours later. Stone didn’t take the stage until 10 p.m., instead only performing one show for all of that night’s ticketholders. The following night, upon arriving for another performance, Stone was arrested in front of the theater for failing to pay child support.
