On this day in music history…
In 1979, Van Morrison performed at SIU Arena in Carbondale, Illinois, drawing an audience of about 4,000 people. Morrison had released his Into the Music album in August, and it was charting at number 43 at the time of the concert. David “Honeyboy” Edwards was the opening act.
In 1986, the first Bridge School benefit concert took place at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. Organized by Neil Young and his wife Pegi, the concert’s lineup consisted of Neil Young, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Nils Lofgren, Don Henley, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and Robin Williams. The non-profit event’s proceeds went to the Bridge School, a school for children with extensive speech and physical disabilities. Pegi Young was one of the school’s founders.
