On this day in music history…

In 1980, Elton John performed to a crowd of about 9,300 people at SIU Arena in Carbondale, Illinois. John had a throat infection, which he mentioned to the audience at one point during the show. His 21 at 33 album had been released five months earlier, and it was charting at number 118 at the time of the concert.

In 2003, the Richard Linklater film School of Rock hit theaters. Starring Jack Black and Joan Cusack, the movie tells the story of a musician posing as a substitute teacher and forming a rock band with his students. The movie featured songs by AC/DC, Kiss, The Clash, David Bowie, Cream, The Who, Ramones, Stevie Nicks, T. Rex, and others. School of Rock received positive critical reviews, and the film was a success at the box office.
