On this day in music history…
In 1954, Elvis Presley performed on the Grand Ole Opry for the first time. Presley was 19 years old, and he had only released his first two singles. He played the B-side of his debut single, “Blue Moon of Kentucky.” The crowd reacted politely, but not enthusiastically, and the Opry staff was not impressed. Presley never performed on the program again.
In 1992, the music video for “Erotica” by Madonna premiered on MTV. The racy video was shown a total of three times on the network before being banned. This was Madonna’s second video to be banned on MTV. The first was her “Justify My Love” video, which was supposed to premiere on MTV, but ultimately never aired on the network.
