On this day in music history…
In 1979, Styx played to a crowd of about 9,500 people at SIU Arena in Carbondale. Styx’s Pieces of Eight album, which had been released the previous year, was on the albums chart at number 96. The band would release Cornerstone the following month, and it would go on to be their first album to chart in the top five.
In 1998, the second episode of the fourth season of The Drew Carey Show aired on ABC. Titled “In Ramada Da Vida,” the episode follows Drew’s band, The Horndogs, as they land some gigs at a Ramada Inn lounge. Looking to fill out their sound, Drew and his friends audition several musicians to be their new guitarist. In a three-minute audition scene, cameos were made by Slash, Rick Nielsen, Dusty Hill, Matthew Sweet, Joey Ramone, Lisa Loeb, Dave Mustaine, Roy Clark, Jonny Lang, Michael Stanley, and Joe Walsh, who played the role of Ed. In the end, Ed gets the job.
