On this day in music history…
In 1979, Bad Company performed to a crowd of over 6,600 people at SIU Arena in Carbondale, Illinois. Earlier that year, the group had released their fifth album, Desolation Angels, which was charting at number 43 at the time of the concert. The concert received a very negative review in the Daily Egyptian, and — as if that wasn’t bad enough — a teenage girl had also fallen from the bleachers during the show, resulting in a broken neck, a fractured leg, and a broken arm.
In 1983, Kiss made a highly anticipated appearance on MTV—sans makeup, marking the first time many fans saw the plain faces of members Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Vinnie Vincent, and Eric Carr. Kiss’s unmasked era would last about 12 years; in 1996, they’d return to wearing their trademark makeup.
