On this day in music history…

In 1967, The Beatles began filming their third movie, Magical Mystery Tour. Taping wrapped 14 days later. The movie first aired on television in December of that year, and it was panned by critics, which was unusual for The Beatles. The album of the same name, however, was praised by critics, and it topped the albums chart in the States.

In 1977, Bing Crosby taped his final Christmas special, Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas, at ATV Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire, England. David Bowie appeared as a special guest on the show, recording a duet of “Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy” with Crosby. Crosby passed away a month later, before the special made it to air. Five years later, RCA released the duet as a single, yielding another hit for both singers.
