On this day in music history…

In 1965, Jefferson Airplane played their first concert at The Matrix in San Francisco. The Matrix was a club that held about 100 people, and Jefferson Airplane member Marty Balin was one of the owners as well as its founder and manager. That night, San Francisco Chronicle writer Ralph Gleason was in the audience. Gleason’s next column was all about Jefferson Airplane, and record companies immediately began exploring the group. A year later, their debut album was released.

In 1973, Lynyrd Skynyrd released their debut album, titled (Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd). The album was produced by former Blood, Sweat & Tears member Al Kooper. The following year, (Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd) was certified Gold by the RIAA, after which it peaked at number 27 on the albums chart.
