On this day in music history…
In 1978, the Commodores topped the singles chart for the first time with “Three Times a Lady,” the first single from their Natural High album. Even though this was their first time at number 1, the Commodores already had history in the Top 40, scoring eight hits in the previous four years. The band would find themselves in the Top 40 several more times, but only once more in the top spot.
In 1994, Woodstock ’94 kicked off at Winston Farm in Saugerties, New York, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the original Woodstock Music & Art Fair. Approximately 350,000 people filled the farm for the next three days, taking the organizers by surprise since they had only sold about 164,000 tickets. The lineup included Orleans, Blues Traveler, Collective Soul, Joe Cocker, Blind Melon, Melissa Etheridge, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Aerosmith, The Cranberries, The Band, The Allman Brothers Band, Spin Doctors, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Peter Gabriel, Green Day, Santana, Jimmy Cliff, and more.
