On this day in music history…
In 1964, The Kinks released “You Really Got Me” in the U.K., where it would top the singles chart. A month later, the single was released in the U.S., where it peaked at number 7 on the chart. The release of The Kinks’ self-titled debut album followed a couple months later in the U.K., and in December, the album was released in the States.
In 1968, the second and final day of the Newport Pop Festival took place at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, California. The festival’s lineup included Jefferson Airplane, Sonny & Cher, Eric Burdon & The Animals, The Byrds, Grateful Dead, Steppenwolf, Alice Cooper, Canned Heat, and others. Over 100,000 people attended the festival.
