MOUNT VERNON, Ill. (WJPF) – Charges have been dropped – at least for now – against a 22-year-old woman for her role in a Mt. Vernon shooting that left two dead and five injured.

Jerria Smith had been the only person arrested in connection to the shooting that happened early Sunday morning during a large gathering near the intersection of South 15th and Lamar Streets.

Charges including reckless discharge of a firearm and obstruction of justice were dropped without prejudice yesterday following a short hearing – meaning the state’s attorney’s office can bring charges against Jerria Smith again at a future date.

Police say despite a  large crowd and a number of witnesses, very few are cooperating with the investigation.
