On this day in music history…
In 1978, the Michael Schultz film Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was released. The cast was loaded with musical stars, including Peter Frampton, Alice Cooper, Billy Preston, The Bee Gees, Aerosmith, and Earth, Wind & Fire. The movie received negative reviews, but the soundtrack album was a success, charting at number 5. Two of the album’s singles became hits: Earth, Wind & Fire’s rendition of “Got to Get You into My Life” peaked at number 9, and Aerosmith’s rendition of “Come Together” peaked at number 23.
In 1982, “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor topped the Billboard Hot 100. It stayed at number 1 for six weeks. The song was recorded for the Sylvester Stallone film Rocky III, and it was the title track of Survivor’s third album. Survivor would team up with Stallone again in 1985, recording “Burning Heart” for Rocky IV.
