On this day in music history…
In 1970, “Mama Told Me (Not to Come)” by Three Dog Night hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song featured Cory Wells on lead vocals, and it was Three Dog Night’s first chart-topping hit. It stayed in the top spot for two weeks. The band went on to score two more number 1 hits: “Joy to the World” (featuring Chuck Negron on lead vocals) topped the chart in 1971, and “Black and White” (featuring Danny Hutton on lead vocals) would take the top spot in 1972.
In 1990, Guns N’ Roses fired drummer Steven Adler. Adler had joined the band in 1985 following the departure of original Guns N’ Roses drummer Rob Gardner, shortly after the formation of the group. Adler’s relationship with the band soured over time due to his drug addiction, which eventually led to his termination. He was replaced by Matt Sorum, who had been The Cult’s touring drummer. Sorum would drum in Guns N’ Roses for seven years.
