On this day in music history…
In 1988, Cheap Trick topped the singles chart with “The Flame,” which was the lead single from their Lap of Luxury album. It was the band’s first number 1 hit, and it was their first song to chart in the Top 40 in nine years. “The Flame” was not written by the members of Cheap Trick—Bob Mitchell and former Atomic Rooster member Nick Graham wrote the song. Epic Records had been pushing the band to work with outside writers.
In 1995, Grateful Dead performed at Soldier Field in Chicago. It turned out to be their final concert. Founding member Jerry Garcia would pass away from a heart attack exactly one month later. Following Garcia’s death, the remaining band members decided to disband the group. Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, and Mickey Hart would return to Soldier Field 20 years later with some other musicians for their final three Fare Thee Well concerts, which celebrated 50 years of the Grateful Dead.
