On this day in music history…

In 1968,
The Band released their debut album, titled Music from Big Pink. The group had already worked extensively with Bob Dylan the previous couple years, and after obtaining their own record deal, they began working on their first album at the beginning of 1968. Music from Big Pink peaked at number 30 on the albums chart, and the album’s single, “The Weight,” reached number 63 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In 1978, the first Texxas Jam took place at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. It was presented by the Texxas World Music Festival. Around 100,000 people were in attendance, braving the sweltering heat, which reached 120 degrees on the stadium floor. The lineup included Journey, Walter Egan, Van Halen, Eddie Money, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, Heart, Head East, Atlanta Rhythm Section, and headliners Ted Nugent and Aerosmith. Between the rock acts, Cheech & Chong performed for the crowd. There would be 10 more Texxas Jams, with the festival happening annually through 1988.
