On this day in music history…

In 1965, The Byrds’ rendition of the Bob Dylan song “Mr. Tambourine Man” took the top spot on the singles chart. It stayed at number 1 for one week, and it was on the chart for a total of 13 weeks. “Mr. Tambourine Man” was the title track of their debut album, which included three other Dylan covers: “Spanish Harlem Incident,” “All I Really Want to Do,” and “Chimes of Freedom.” The Byrds would score another chart-topping hit later that year with the Pete Seeger-penned tune “Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There is a Season).”

In 1977, Elvis Presley performed his final concert at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, Indiana. Twenty days earlier, his last single to come out in his lifetime, “Way Down,” had been released. Seven weeks after his final concert, Presley was found dead at his Graceland mansion, on the day that he was scheduled to leave for another tour.
